Child Health Policy
·Curious Kids Learning Center is concerned about every child’s health and the spread of infectious diseases. We use the policies and practices outlined in Caring for Our Children regarding care plans for children with special needs, asthma, medical needs, food allergies, and medication administration.

Mandated Reporting requirements
All employees at Curious Kids Learning Center are mandated reporters of suspected child abuse and/or neglect, including Abusive Head Trauma (AHT)/ Shaken Baby Syndrome.

Infant Care
Abusive Head Trauma (AHT)/ Shaken Baby Syndrome Policy
· According to the Mayo Clinic, Shaken Baby Syndrome or Abusive Head Trauma (SBS/AHT) is “a serious brain injury resulting from forcefully shaking an infant, toddler or young child. SBS destroys a child’s brain cells and prevents his or her brain from getting enough oxygen. SBS is a form of child abuse that can result in permanent brain damage or death.”
· Curious Kids Learning Center has a policy to prevent, recognize, respond to and report incidences of Shaken Baby Syndrome or Abusive Head Trauma. More information is available in the Parent Handbook - or ask one of the co-directors for more information.
· Curious Kids Learning Center understands that one of our main responsibilities as child care professionals is to keep children safe and healthy. More information on preventative measures can be found in the Parent handbook or can be discussed with the co-directors.
Recognizing Signs & Symptoms of SBS/AHT in Children
Irritability and/or high-pitched crying
Seizures
Bruises on upper arms, rib cage or head (may be a result of gripping or hitting the head)
Lack of appetite
Vomiting
Poor feeding
Lack of smiling or vocalization
Difficulty staying awake or altered consciousness
Inability to lift head or rigidity
Inability to focus the eyes or track movement
Unequal pupil size
Reporting suspected SBS/AHT (or any other abuse) by staff
Staff are mandated reporters and are required to report any suspected SBS/AHT or other maltreatment of a child. Staff will report suspected abuse/maltreatment to the PA Department of Human Services Childline Hotline
If you suspect SBS/AHT, you can call Childline at 800-932-0313 to report the suspected abuse/ maltreatment.
Infant Safe Sleep
Place the baby in the crib on their back at all times, nap and night times
Use a firm, flat sleep surface
Keep your baby’s sleep area in the same room where you sleep for the first 6 months
Keep blankets, bumper pads, soft toys, or other objects out of the area the baby is sleeping
